Despite a challenging start in the group stages, where Serbia faced defeats from Australia, Spain, and Hungary, the team found their stride in the knockout rounds. Led by a stellar performance from Milos Cuk, who scored three goals, and Nikola Jaksic, who added two more, Serbia’s offense was formidable. Radoslav Filipovic’s remarkable goalkeeping, with 11 crucial saves, played a pivotal role in turning the tide in favor of Serbia.

Reflecting on the journey, Jaksic remarked, “We have broken the barrier after the quarterfinal against Greece. After that, we just played better and better as a team. We played better every single game. It was the idea that we wanted to do in the first place. We won the game deservedly so.”

Croatia, who last stood on the Olympic podium in Rio 2016 with a silver, faced disappointment again as they fell short against Serbia. Croatian goalkeeper Marko Bijac expressed his regret, noting, “It is hard to speak about this game. We were not on the same level that we had been in the quarterfinal and the semifinal. This is the only thing I regret. Serbia deserved this victory.”

In the bronze medal match, the United States triumphed over Hungary in a tense shootout, finishing with a score of 11-8. The victory marked a significant achievement for the US team, capping off their Olympic campaign with a well-deserved place on the podium.

The Paris 2024 Olympics have once again demonstrated the global appeal and competitive spirit of water polo. Serbia’s gold medal win not only underscores their dominance in the sport but also highlights the thrilling unpredictability of the Olympic Games.
