Returning to His Roots: A Nod to the Past
In a surprising turn of events, Chris Evans made a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine not as Captain America, but as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch. Fans of the 2005 Fantastic Four movie might remember Evans as the hot-headed superhero with the power to control flames. It’s been nearly two decades since Evans donned the Human Torch suit, and he spoke candidly about revisiting the role.
Evans revealed that the opportunity came about thanks to Ryan Reynolds, who reached out to him about reprising his old role. “Honestly, Ryan might be the only guy that I would’ve done it for because he’s just got the Midas touch,” Evans told Entertainment Weekly. “His self-awareness makes him almost invincible. He makes the joke before the audience gets a chance to make the joke, so if you’re going to revisit a character and you have to find a way to make it work, Ryan’s humor makes just about everything work, so you feel an automatic sense of safety.”
A Nostalgic Experience
The experience of stepping back into Johnny Storm’s shoes was surprisingly smooth for Evans. The actor mentioned that his return to the role involved only a few days on set, and the costume was “slightly” upgraded. “Primarily because where we find Johnny, he’s meant to be a little more rundown, so the costume didn’t have to be pristine,” Evans explained. He contrasted this with the meticulous attention to detail from the early Marvel days, noting that the process was more relaxed this time around.
Reflecting on his time as the Human Torch, Evans expressed nothing but fond memories. “Doing that movie, you turn a corner and it just feels like it brought me to the next level of my career. I loved working with the people that were on that film. I loved the role. It was nothing but love and affection for that time,” he said.
No Plans for a Captain America Comeback
Despite the nostalgia and the fun of revisiting an old character, Evans is clear about his future with Captain America. When asked if the new movie made him reconsider returning as Steve Rogers, Evans was firm. “No. No, not really,” he stated. It seems that while Evans enjoyed his cameo, he has no plans to return to his iconic role as Captain America.
As fans continue to celebrate the various phases of Chris Evans' career, his latest appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine serves as a delightful throwback and a testament to his lasting impact on the Marvel Universe. While we may not see him as Captain America again, his contributions to the Marvel legacy remain unforgettable.
